Access To Work

Access To Work Grant

An Access to Work grant can provide practical support if you have a disability that affects your work performance, including conditions such as dyslexia, ADHD, and autism. You can qualify for the grant whether you are in paid employment or self-employed.

Access to Work will cover all approved costs if:

  •  You have started a new job and submit a claim within the first six weeks.
  •  You are self-employed or operate a small business.
  •  You are employed by a company with fewer than 10 staff members.
  •  You require a support worker or training.

The contribution amount depends on the size of the organisation. Nevertheless, one-on-one support training is typically fully funded.

For more information and to apply, please contact Access to Work:

Here is some information to gather in advance:

Your workplace address and postcode.

  • The name of a workplace contact who can authorise your Access to Work payments.
  • Your workplace contact’s email address or work phone number.
  • Your unique tax reference number (if you’re self-employed).

It’s advisable to take some time to reflect and note down:

  • How your condition affects you at work or your commute.
  • What assistance you are currently receiving.
  • If you know what additional support would benefit you, and it’s perfectly fine if you’re unsure at this stage.

We recommend contacting Access to Work as soon as possible, as the waiting period for a workplace needs assessment is at least three months, with coaching potentially starting up to a year later.

It’s normal to feel uncertain about the type of support you might need, but if you recognise that you require assistance and are facing difficulties, that’s completely acceptable.

Access to Work will arrange your workplace needs assessment with a consultant to determine the most suitable support (reasonable adjustments). The assessment can be conducted at your office or online, and you will receive a report that includes three quotes for each support option. You are free to choose a recommended provider or any other reputable provider.

We recommend that you involve your manager, as the employer must contribute to funding.
